A highly anticipated Durango event is back! June 3-6, 2021 river rats from far and wide will join us on the Animas River for events such as river surfing, stand-up paddling, freestyle and slalom kayaking, and an inflatable rodeo. To end it in comradery, the festival finishes with the local favorite costume parade where floaters start at 32nd Street and go through the Santa Rita rapids!
This event was established in 1983 by local Nancy Wiley with the first whitewater rodeo. Durango has hosted many US National trials and championships over the years in the whitewater park. The park features Smelter rapid, Corner Pocket, Ponderosa Wave, and Clocktower presenting challenges to these pro athletes. However, the beloved Animas River provides easygoing waters for amateurs on hot summer days as well.
Animas River Days isn’t all in the river. Vendors host demos for gear, food to refresh the athletes and viewers, live music, and a SKA beer garden. There will be an online silent auction with brands such as Alpaka, Astral, NRS, Stolquist, Badfish, and of course local businesses like 4 Corners River Sports. The event is going green and aiming to be a Zero Waste production by 2022, using sustainable products that can be composted, reused, or recycled. These four days are a Durango staple and ones you don’t want to miss!
Local rafting companies are also gearing up for a big season despite not having a huge winter with major snow fall and a lot of snow pack in the higher elevations. Rafting is one of Durango’s biggest attractions with multiple companies to choose from for your rafting experience. It’s a special experience and you get to tour town from a different point of view!
