durango cowboy poetryPreserving and perpetuating the traditional ways of the American West is the mission of the Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering. While this is an all-year round program, the annual Gathering in the Fall is a main attraction. 2022 is the event’s 34th year and from September 29th – October 1st there will be many live performances, exhibits, trail & train rides, a parade, and more!

While many local venues will host performances, some of the more unique venues are on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a horse back ride in the San Juan Mountains, and an old time Cowboy Chuckwagon Breakfast. Enjoy musicians, poets, and storytellers at galleries and celebrate western heritage with young western poets, at a wild west shootout, and a grand parade on Main Avenue!

For the rest of the year, Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering supports programs like the Basin Rodeo Team, Future Farmers of America, and outreach to many schools in Durango, Bayfield, and Ignacio teaching about western heritage.

This is a wonderful local program that is carrying on traditions and sharing these historical ways with tourists and locals alike. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions you have about Durango.
