Holidays have passed and for most of us, a normal routine and schedule becomes a welcome break after the craziness of the last couple months. Now is the perfect time to take advantage of Durango’s winter activities. In many places of the country, people complain about being stuck inside in the middle of winter; in Durango, winter is prime time for outdoor sports!
Cross country skiing is a local favorite, and we have fantastic places to enjoy the sport. Durango Nordic Center is located 1/3 mile north of Purgatory. Tomorrow night (Wednesday), the McDonald’s Twilight Night Series #1 begins. Nordic skiers, fat bikers, and snowshoers race the track under the stars from 5-8 pm. It will be held at the Purgatory base area near Purgy’s. On Friday evening, the Alpine Bank Full Moon Howler will take place from 6-9 pm at the Durango Nordic Center. This event offers s’mores, soups, pastries from Bread, and refreshments from Ska, Animas Chocolate Company, and Coca-Cola. Admission is $15 per person, and proceeds benefit the Snowcat Capital Campaign.
The area offers other places to enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Chicken Creek Nordic ski area is located just outside Mancos in the San Juan National Forest. Many enjoy finding their own place to explore—Andrews Lake is a favorite and beautiful at this time of year. We love where we live, year-round!
