It’s officially the first day of fall, and with this season comes changing colors, shorter days, and chilly evenings. One of the best ways to enjoy fall in Durango is a local color drive, and we have so many places to explore.
Typically, early in the season a trip to the Silverton area provides a vast array of colors. Heading over the mountains and past Purgatory, the views are astounding. Couple the drive with a stop in Silverton for a picnic lunch or an outdoor restaurant and it’s the perfect day.
In the opposite direction, driving towards Mancos and turning towards Jackson Gulch, visitors can see many gorgeous sites. This area includes places such as Jersey Jim, Windy Gap, and Gold Run. With these drives, you can stop and explore, including a hike in your adventure. Wear bright colors in case there are hunters in the area!
Later in the season, the Dolores River Valley usually turns beautiful shades of fall colors. Rico and Telluride are fun destinations, and the San Juan Skyway is a classic fall color drive, with many places to stop and enjoy along the way. We are fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and fall is a fantastic time to enjoy the changing mountainsides.
