It’s no secret Durango is home to many craft breweries, but did you know we even have local wine? While it’s not as robust as the breweries, our area is home to some excellent wine. One of the local favorites is located in Ignacio: Fox Fire farms.
It is part of a 910-acre working farm. Fox Fire Farms specializes in “cold climate” grape varieties. Riesling, Prairie Star, Aromella, Vignoles, and Petit Pearl are all some of the featured options. This is one of the highest vineyards in Colorado, at 6,500 feet above sea level, making these wines unique.
The history of the farm dates back to the early 1900s, and five generations of the original family have lived and worked on the farm. It’s historically been a sheep ranch, but now includes the winery and special event locations in addition to sheep ranching. The one-room schoolhouse where the original owner’s daughters attended school has been preserved, making this a truly special property!
From wine tasting to picnics, to enjoying an afternoon outside during the beautiful fall season, Fox Fire farms is a local treasure. We are nearing the end of the season for wine tasting, so head out before winter comes. Take a look at the website for more details: https://www.foxfirefarms.com/
