In 1971, the two Mayer brothers challenged each other to a race. From Durango to Silverton; Jim, via the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad train, and Tom, on his road bike. Tom won the wagered candy bar. The following year, 36 bicycle riders took on the challenge to beat the train despite the 47 miles with 5,700 feet elevation gain and over two 10,000-foot passes. Since then, the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic has evolved into the iconic southwestern bike race drawing racers and onlookers to participate in this weekend long event.
This year, a new event has been added to the lineup. A 23 mile jaunt from Ouray to Silverton, which includes 3,300 feet of elevation gain. Like the Iron Horse, this tour/race will have Highway 550 closed for cyclist safety. Since 2014, the Train that the cyclists race has 100 seats dedicated to Veterans, Active Duty Military, Gold & Blue Star Moms, spouses, children, and friends. Other fun events surrounding the IHBC include the Faceplant Beer Kick Off Party, Sprite Kids Race, Cruiser Crit, King / Queen of the Mountain, and many more!
Be a part of Durango and southwest Colorado’s infamous weekend long event starting May 27th, 2022! Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions you have about this iconic weekend.
