This week and weekend, we head into the annual La Plata County Fair. This tradition has been occurring for 70 years! There will be several fantastic activities for the whole family. Special events this year include a concert Friday evening, a talent contest, Demolition Derby, and Fair Family Dance on the Patio.
In addition, there will be several exhibits for economics, creative arts, and horticulture exhibits. Exhibits showcase a variety of skills—everything from baked goods to canned vegetables, homemade beer and wine to needlework will be represented. A children’s art gallery, photography exhibit, floriculture, and more will be on display. This is such a fun way to see how much work people put into their crafts, and appreciate the dedication and creativity required.
Livestock includes cattle, goats, poultry, rabbits, and more. It’s so much fun to walk through the livestock displays, and it’s an especially great learning experience for kids to see the variety and sizes of the animals.
The carnival will be open Wednesday, August 8 through Sunday, August 12, and there will be a Beer Garden open Thursday, August 9 through Sunday, August 12. There are so many ways to enjoy the La Plata County Fair. Take a look at the 2018 Fair Book for details on each of the segments and exhibits, as well as a full Fair Schedule. We hope you get a chance to visit the fair this year, and support those who have worked hard to prepare an entry. It’s a Durango tradition we love and appreciate!
