Today Is Voting Day!

FlagToday is voting day! As we head to the polls, we are grateful for the ability to make our opinions count. On a local level, several heated races will impact the next term.

The race for the Sheriff is one of the bigger for us this year. Sean Smith (Democrat) is contesting his boss, current Sheriff Duke Schirard (Republican). We look forward to seeing who will be the next La Plata County Sheriff.

Another of the notable races is between Mike McLachlan (Democrat) and J. Paul Brown (Republican) for the State Representative District 59. McLachlan is the incumbent, but the interesting fact is that Brown was the former Representative, and they ran in 2012 against one another.

For County Commissioner, Brad Blake (Republican) will face Cynthia Roebuck (Democrat). They are vying to replace Republican Bobby Lieb on the board that comprises three people. Major topics include falling tax revenue and whether a new airport project is fiscally responsible.

There are other items on the ballot, with both state and local implications.

As we prepare to celebrate Veteran’s Day next Tuesday (November 11), voting seems to be one of the most practical ways to celebrate our freedom. We celebrate those who fought so we are able to live in a country where our vote matters, and citizens are allowed an opinion in political matters. Remember to exercise your right as a U.S. citizen by voting, and thank our veterans by attending the Veteran’s Day parade at 11 am on November 11. It will start on Main Avenue South.  Thanks to all who have served our country, and to those who will be serving this next term.
