Up the Rock, Down the Rock

Grab your rope, harness, and friends and head on down to the crag! Durango offers a range of sandstone, quartzite, lime stone, and granite to climb on. With a full range of difficulties, the terrain becomes a gym! You can solo boulders, do multi-pitch routes, and even ice climb in the cold months. Jordan Weiler, a local gear pro and avid climber, says that his favorite place in the area is Wham Ridge. “It’s a big, multi-pitch alpine route situated a little north of town leading up Vestal Peak. You climb a 14,000 ft. peak. The views are amazing and it’s one of the most beautiful basins. It’s on the classics list for all of Colorado for a reason!” he explains.

For the less experienced climber, local trails lead you to popular areas such as Sailing Hawks, Turtle Lake, East Animas, and X Rock all with 10 minutes of downtown. While climbing is primarily a spring to fall activity, some walls get enough sun to venture out in the winter. Even more winter options within the area for ice climbing include an annual ice fest in Ouray! Durango is home to a large climbing community that also has groups on Facebook to help you get connected! So, if you’re looking for another fun reason to get outdoors or you are already an experienced climber, Durango has got the rock for you!
