Vallecito Lake – Durango’s Hidden Treasure

Created with Sketch.

With beautiful weather this week, it is starting to feel like summer is on its way. We like to feature local activities and adventures, and one of our hidden gems is Vallecito Lake.

Located just 18 miles from Durango, this beautiful location is about 8,000 feet above sea level. It has 12 miles of shoreline and sits in the middle of the San Juan National Forest. The marina is open, and fishing is allowed. Fishing licenses may be purchased at the marina or online.

There are day use areas that may be used, and passes must be purchased for these as well. Local restaurants offer takeout, or pack a picnic and enjoy the outdoors and views!

Hiking and camping are also options. In fact, the Lake Walking Trail goes around the circumference of the lake.  The Vallecito River Trail runs along the river all the way to Silverton (starts at the end of County Road 500). Both of these options will let you exercise and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

While social distancing guidelines are still in place, a day trip to Vallecito in the near future is a perfect way to enjoy the outdoors and beauty in our own backyard. Take a look at this website for more details, and enjoy:
