April is a transition month for the weather in the Rocky Mountains, even with melting snow and warming days, the local events do not take a break! Here are some of our favorite April events in Durango, CO.
Sunday, April 9th is Purgatory Ski Resort’s closing day. In celebration of another great season, the annual pond skimming contest begins at 12:30 with live music from local musicians all day. 100 contestants will strive to impress the judges with style points and get enough speed to not sink into the “pond”. Oh, and there are alligators?!
Earth Day is on Saturday, April 22nd and there will be a parade and celebration down Main Avenue. Starting at 10:10 am at the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Train Station everyone is invited to walk or bike to Buckley Park in the earth, animal, or fungi costume. From 11 am – 3 pm in Buckley Park where there will be live music, food, dancing, workshops, and more to enjoy. In honor of Earth Day, this will be a zero-waste event with the Bring It! initiative for bringing your reusable mugs and containers as well as using public transportation or walking/biking.
The annual Durango Wine Experience will be hosted throughout downtown Durango Friday, April 28th. From 4 – 7 pm, there will be hundreds of wines to taste accompanied by light appetizers at many local establishments. On Saturday, April 29th from 3 – 6 pm is the Grand Tasting hosted under the big tent on the Smiley Building lawn. This event will also have hundreds of wines, beers, and spirits to try along with food pairings from local restaurants. 10 local nonprofits will be receiving generous grants in return for volunteering at this event; it is a great social weekend for a cause and you won’t want to miss it!
These are just three of the many events happening next month. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions regarding these or other Durango activities.
