Between enjoying the high country and soaking in the summer evenings, August offers plenty of events throughout the Durango area! From returning favorites to outdoor fitness, new bands, game nights, and community gatherings, here are three you won’t want to miss!
National Night Out
On August 4th from 5:00 to 7:30 pm, Main Avenue and Buckley Park will be filled with games, demos, and family-friendly fun. This free event gives the community an opportunity to meet local law enforcement, firefighters, EMS professionals, and tour emergency vehicles. Enjoy a BBQ and beverage while asking questions, exploring careers, and even trying on tactical gear.
La Plata County Fair
Celebrate our region’s Western heritage at the La Plata County Fair, taking place August 5th - 9th. This five-day community tradition includes livestock competitions, a chili cook-off, a 5k run/walk, a community BBQ, Fair Royalty, Cowboy Church, the demolition derby, and much more. For decades, local 4-H and FFA participants have developed, showcased, and competed in talents and skills that remain an important part of our agricultural roots.
SUP Pilates
Durango Nordic, Pause Fitness & Nutrition, and ROLL E-Bike & SUP Rentals have collaborated to create a stand-up paddleboard Pilates class hosted at Twilight Lake near the Durango Nordic Center. On August 23rd from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, participants can test their balance and strength while enjoying the incredible mountain setting, whether they’re seasoned paddlers or just getting started!
