Lake Nighthorse

Lake Nighthorse

Lake Nighthorse has become a summer staple in Durango. Minutes from downtown Durango, this spot is perfect for afternoon dips or all day boating adventures.

The History

A part of the Bureau of Reclamation’s Animas La Plata (ALP) Project, dam construction began in 2003. With the initial fill with water from the Animas River completed in 2011, this lake consumes 1,500 acres at its maximum elevation. The entire reservoir site encompasses 5,500 acres including a tribute garden overlook. Access is off of County Road 210 and just minutes away from town offering an easy summer adventure. Lake Nighthorse opened to the public in 2018. Seasonal users have grown every year since, most recently exceeding over 100,000 visitors in 2021.
