March marks the beginning of spring, with the equinox falling on March 20th this year. After a mild winter, our community events have continued without pause, and there’s plenty to look forward to this month.
Snow Science & Snowshoe Hike
The San Juan Mountain Association is teaming up with Mountain Studies for two snowshoe hikes in March. Both days include discussions about forest ecology, watersheds, climate change, and the future of snowpack here. Interactive snow pit digging and interpretive hiking will be rewarded with a bonfire and hot drinks at the end. The first event is on March 8th, meeting at 1 pm at the Andrew’s Lake Winter Parking Lot for a two-mile hike. On March 22nd, you’ll meet at 1 pm at the summit of Wolf Creek Pass to hike two miles around the area. Both events are free, though donations are appreciated. Reservations are required, and snowshoe rentals are also available upon request.
Swing Social Dances & Classes
Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or just starting, the Swing Bees offer a variety of classes and social dance events throughout the year. If you are looking to expand your skills, you can learn dances ranging from the Lindy Hop and the East Coast Swing to the Balboa, Shim Sham, or Vernacular Solo Jazz. The Swing Bees host many classes and social dance events throughout the year. The Lindy Level Up Weekend Workshop is on the 8th and 9th from 10 am - 3 pm with a social dance on Saturday from 7 - 10 pm. Although this class requires prerequisites, there are plenty of other events for all skill levels.
Durango Celtic Festival
Celebrating their 11th year, the Durango Celtic Festival brings a weekend of music, workshops, and cultural festivities to the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall on March 28th - 29th. One-day tickets and weekend passes are available starting at $45. Old Blind Dogs, Heron Valley, and Dàimh are just three of the performances that you can enjoy.
These are just a few of the happenings in Durango this March, and you can learn about additional fun events here. As long-time residents and RealtorsⓇ, Max and Deven are always happy to share more area insights. Please don’t hesitate to contact us!
