As the holiday season approaches, the spirit of giving is in full swing. Durango and surrounding communities are tight knit and host a wide variety of wonderful events and programs to volunteer and give back. Supporting local organizations is a part of our business, so we’re excited to share some of our favorite events during this season.
Festival of Trees & Wreaths at D&SNGRR
This tradition is celebrating it’s 21st year, running from December 6th - 8th, 2024. Hosted at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum, the display is available to the public to view and bid on from 12 - 5 pm. Cortez will be hosting a similar event from November 25 - December 6th. Proceeds from the auction benefit Community Connections, a nonprofit organization working with people with disabilities, developmental delays, and complex needs live and thrive in Southwest Colorado.
Project Merry Christmas
The La Plata Family Center Coalition is organizing this year’s Project Merry Christmas of La Plata County. Registration for Angels opens on November 4, 2024 with collection sites popping up at multiple locations around Durango. This toy drive benefits the children in the community this holiday season.
Durango Harley Davidson Toy Run
The 32nd Annual Toy Run will begin at 10:30 at Harley-Davidson with coffee and donuts, then follow Santa’s motorcycle to the La Plata County Fairgrounds. A chili lunch, raffle, door prizes, silent auction, cash bar, and more will start at 11:30 on October 27th. The entrance fee is a new, unwrapped tour worth $10+ or $10+ cash, benefiting children and families in need during the holiday season through the ASH Foundation and Toys for Tots.
Salvation Army Bell Ringing
The iconic Salvation Army Red Kettle dates back to 1891 and has helped millions over the years. Since the donations stay local, we are proud bell ringers for the Western Territory leading up to Christmas. The money from this event primarily goes towards meals, shelter, and children’s Christmas gifts with many other services throughout the year. Find us and other Wells Group Realtors around town ringing the bell this holiday season.
Manna Soup Kitchen
Open year-round since 1985, Manna Soup Kitchen provides a special menu during the holiday season. Each week there is a take-out window, community fridge, and food market open, making hot meals and groceries accessible to those in need. Their resource center also provides housing assistance, job assistance, showers, clothing assistance, transportation services, and much more.
The Durango Team is invested in our community and we’re so grateful to be able to serve the greater Southwest Colorado area. Please let us know if you have questions about local non-profit organizations, events or other community centered programs available.
