Durango, Colorado Creeks

Durango, Colorado Creeks

Durango and its surrounding areas are home to numerous streams and creeks, some of which flow directly into town, while others join the Animas or other rivers before reaching us. These streams are not only a critical piece of our ecosystem, but also provide natural irrigation and enhance the beauty of many properties. Here are some of the most notable streams and creeks in Southwest Colorado.

In Town Durango

Junction Creek

This well known creek begins high in the La Plata Mountains on Kennebec Pass, north west of town. On its way south, Flagler Fork, Elk Creek, and Castle Creek join it. It is easily accessible and flows parallel to the Colorado Trail section nearest to town. Junction Creek Street, which turns into Junction Creek Road/CR 204 features many homes with creek frontage. It meets the Animas River at about 21st Street, near Durango High School.

Lightner Creek

Also beginning near Kennebec Pass in La Plata Canyon, Lightner Creek flows south where it can first be accessed from Lightner Creek Road/CR 207. This little canyon is lush from the water with many homes enjoying the gorgeous setting. From here, Lightner Creek continues south along Highway 160 heading east back into town and joins the Animas River near the dog park and Highway 160/550 intersection.

Surrounding Areas

Hermosa Creek

Hermosa Creek begins on the west side of Sliderock Ridge and Graysell Point Peak near Bolam Lake. Many other creeks join in on its journey south, most notably the East Fork Hermosa Creek which flows behind Purgatory Ski Resort. The Hermosa Creek Trail follows the creek 19 miles south and ends just shy of the north confluence of CR 203/Hwy 550.

Cascade Creek

This creek starts on Rolling Mountain and travels south, crossing the Colorado Trail while absorbing other creeks along the way. Cascade Creek is near Highway 550, and can be accessed from the south end of Lime Creek Road, which is a popular spot with a swimming hole, rocks to climb on, and ice climbing in the winter months. Farther south it merges with Lime Creek ultimately reaching the Animas River near Electra Lake.

Lime Creek

West Lime Creek, North Lime Creek, and East Lime Creek all converge into Lime Creek in the same mountain range where Cascade Creek starts. Flowing south, it meets Highway 550 about 37 miles north of Durango, on the north end Lime Creek Road. Additional creeks join as it winds its way into Cascade Creek.

Farther into the high country to the north and greater surrounding area, there are a multitude of other creeks and streams. Bayfield, Pagosa, and Mancos also have notable creeks as well including: Bear Creek, Beaver Creek, Dry Creek, and Chicken Creek.
