The chilly temperatures have officially arrived in Southwest Colorado as we look forward to the upcoming winter season. As the seasons change, so do the local activities and community events.
Things To Do in Durango in the Winter
Durango and the greater Southwest Colorado area always have a full event calendar. In the winter, the season brings special traditions as well as everyday activities to enjoy solo or with friends.
- When the snow arrives, it’s time to swap the hiking poles for ski poles! There are plenty of opportunities to downhill ski at Purgatory Resort and Chapman Hill, cross-country ski, or explore and ski in the backcountry. Snowshoeing, fat tire biking, and snowmobiling are other great ways to enjoy the trails.
- Trade the snow for ice and give ice skating a whirl! The indoor rink at Chapman Hill is home to local hockey teams and figure skaters, but it’s also available for public skates, skating lessons, and private parties. If you’re a hockey fan like us, you can sometimes catch a Colorado Avalanche game in the lobby - our Avs are off to an incredible start this season, leading the Central Division with a 13-1-5 record!
- The Polar Express, the beloved childhood book, comes to life on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad during the holiday season. This interactive evening excursion includes music, cookies, hot chocolate, and a special gift from Santa. The D&SNGRR also offers winter train rides to Cascade Canyon and a photography-focused experience.
- Snowdown is Durango’s biggest hometown celebration beginning at the end of January. There are tons of activities to participate in, from kids’ events to 21+ events. The Follies live theater performances, Fashion Do’s & Dont’s, and the parade are can’t-miss fan favorites!
- Between all of the fun things to do this winter, sometimes cozying up at home with a fire, a hot beverage, and a movie, book, or game is the perfect way to spend a snowy day. You can also enjoy these simple indoor activities at local theaters, cafes, or public libraries.
Real Estate in the Winter
Although it’s typical for the real estate market to slow down in the winter months, particularly with new listings, it’s still a great time to begin preparing. Buyers can begin interviewing local RealtorsⓇ, get connected with a trusted mortgage lender to start the pre-approval process, and begin refining their wants and needs. Sellers can use this time to prepare their homes for the market, plan their next steps, and be ready to get a jump-start on the spring selling season. For both tenants and homeowners, it’s important to make sure your property is properly weatherized and ready for the colder temperatures.
