Durango and the surrounding area are known for their incredible outdoor adventures and offerings, but sometimes the weather encourages you to stay indoors or you simply want a change of pace. Here are a few of our favorite indoor activities.
Shows
Music, magic, movies, and comedy performances are just some of the shows hosted at a variety of local venues. Enjoy a blockbuster hit or listen to a local band or touring artist at venues like the Community Concert Hall, Animas City Theatre, Durango Arts Center, and our two Allen Theatres locations. Many local restaurants and cafés also host live musicians, DJs, comedians, open-mic nights, and more.
Arts, Crafts, History, and Science
Durango is home to museums that range from the area’s history to an interactive children’s science center. They offer fun, educational ways to spend time indoors and learn something new! To learn a new skill, try out one of many hands-on art classes like stained glass, ceramics, bouquet arranging, or paint-and-sip. Our area also has a great collection of art galleries featuring many different styles and mediums to enjoy.
Indoor Workouts
Although it’s not quite the same as your favorite hiking or biking trail, Durango has many gyms offering tracks, treadmills, stationary bikes, and other equipment to accommodate your workout routine. The Durango Recreation Center has indoor pools and sports courts, the Gravity Lab has indoor rock climbing, and there are multiple dance classes for all ages. Bowling is a fun indoor activity and is just half an hour away in Ignacio at the Sky Ute Casino.
Cozy Reading Day
Settle in with a good read and a cup of coffee or tea at a local café or in the comfort of your own home. Durango has many local bookshops if you’re in need of a new book or visit the Durango Public Library (DPL) for your next great read. The DPL also has inviting reading nooks, an on-site café for a warm drink, and they host many engaging community events.
Cafes & Restaurants
Durango has a wide variety of restaurants, cafés, and other local eateries where you can warm up with a drink and homemade goodies. Especially in downtown Durango, there’s a wide variety of places to enjoy baked goods, artisan chocolates, a local beer, and a delicious meal. Pair it with a book, with a friend, or simply people-watch along Main Avenue.
Shopping
Whether you’re updating your wardrobe or gearing up for your next adventure, Durango’s shops have you covered. The Durango Mall features popular retailers like Old Navy, T.J.Maxx, and Ross, while downtown’s Main Avenue is lined with locally owned boutiques, outdoor outfitters, and much more. Durango also has a great consignment and thrift store scene. Spend a day indoors browsing and supporting local businesses.
