Grocery shopping is one of those tedious chores that must be done wherever you live. Whether you utilize curbside pickup, Instacart deliveries, or a handwritten shopping list, knowing your store options and everything that they offer from products to services can make one fit your needs better than another. Read below for an overview of grocery stores in Durango, CO.
City Market
Part of the Krogers brand, City Market is the operating name in Durango in lieu of sister stores such as Smith’s, King Soopers, Fry’s, and Dillions amongst others across the nation. They offer fresh produce, deli items, an in house bakery, cheese bar, sushi station, floral department, pharmacy, brand name items, and generic merchandise. With two locations in Durango, one in the downtown area and the other on North Main, they serve as a major local resource.
Albertsons
Providing a similar selection of products as City Market, Albertsons also is represented by a variety of store names like Shaw’s, ACME, Vons, and Safeway since their first store in 1939. Their Durango location near downtown Durango and backing up to the Animas River trail has added more choices and brands for locals and visitors. As of early 2024, there has been news of a Krogers and Albertsons merger which both companies shine a positive light on as they are both customer and employee-centric and aim towards having high quality products at a low value available. Kroger has committed to zero store closures although store sales may happen. As three of our major grocery store options, we look forward to the positive outcomes these two stores can offer together.
Walmart
As the only multi-department superstore in Durango, Walmart has groceries, clothing, a pharmacy, electronics, auto center, sporting goods, garden/outdoor items, and more. In 1998, when they first opened in Durango, it was a huge shock to the then, smaller community. However, they’ve filled a niche for a one-stop shop for many items you can’t find elsewhere in the city. They’re located in a large shopping plaza just south of downtown where other large retailers such as Discount Tire, Sally’s Beauty, and more local shops and restaurants reside.
Walgreens
Acting more as a convenience store, Walgreens is also the only other store besides Walmart in Durango with photo printing services. Known for their large selection of pharmaceutical items and services, they also carry a variety of personal care, beauty products, groceries, electronics, and miscellaneous items like greeting cards, games, toys, and memorabilia. There are also two Walgreens locations in Durango including Town Plaza in the downtown area and one on North Main Avenue which offers a drive thru pharmacy option.
Health Food Stores & Neighborhood Stores
Natural Grocers, a nationwide chain, alongside Nature's Oasis and Durango Natural Foods - which are local health food stores - all aim to provide products that are specifically organic, fair-trade, eco-friendly, and many alternative items (gluten free, plant-based, etc.). These stores also have grab and go items, delis, and a wide variety of supplements, respectively.
Smaller convenience type stores are becoming more popular as certain neighborhoods grow in the Durango area. PJ’s Gourmet Market serves the Animas Valley, Mercado Corner Market is located in Three Springs, and Meadow Market is a newer addition in Edgemont.
Added services like curb-side pickup and in store Starbucks are also available at various stores in town.
