Gardening in Durango

Gardening in Durango

Southwest Colorado is surrounded by incredible open space and nature. If you want to personalize your property with additional trees or shrubs, or grow a garden, there are plenty of opportunities throughout the year. Of course, with Colorado’s four seasons, it’s important to know the best times to plant, what grows well in our climate, and to become familiar with our local nurseries.

When To Plant in Durango, CO

Although specific timing depends on what you’re planting, in general, you can begin to start seeds indoors as early as mid-March, though it’s more commonly done in April. Then, after the last frost in late May or early June, you can transplant seedlines outside as well as sow new seeds straight into the ground. Some tender crops require a later planting date in June or sometimes even July and August.

Special growing areas such as greenhouses, solariums, and raised garden beds are great additions if you want to expand your options. These controlled environments can support a wider variety of plants and extend the growing season. Xeriscaping is a water-friendly landscaping option that primarily uses rock and mulch, with drought-tolerant plants that will still add a fresh and natural look to your yard.

What To Plant in Durango, CO

There are a wide variety of options to plant between different types of grain, vegetables, fruit, trees, and flowers in Southwest Colorado. Regionally, corn, wheat, hay, barley, millet, and oats are the main agricultural crops with leafy greens, cucumbers, carrots, squash, onions, brussel sprouts, peppers, and tomatoes thriving in gardens of all sizes. Fruit trees and bushes such as apples, strawberries, apricots, peaches, chokecherries, raspberries, and plums are great additions that, under proper care, will last for years to come. Flowers add a wonderful touch to nearly any property with endless combinations of color. From columbines, roses, and sunflowers to bee balm, lupine, gaillardia, lilies, and more, there is plenty to choose from. Decide between using annuals and perennials (or both!) depending on if you want to reseed every year or enjoy plants that return season after season.

Local wildlife may take an interest in your garden, but there are certain plants and natural deterrents that can keep your plants safe. If you have pets, you’ll want to assure your plants are safe for them too!

Southwest Colorado Soil

Due to our elevation, four seasons, geographical location, and other environmental factors, there are four types of soil found here. Clay (the most common), sand, acidic, and saline soil can create different challenges and may require specific planting strategies. Soil test kits can help determine the composition of your soil and water so you can make educated decisions about where and what to grow.
