Sports
Of course, the same outdoor adventures that adults enjoy can be just as fun for kids! From hiking, skiing, biking, dancing, river sports, horseback riding, rock climbing, and team sports, there’s something for everyone. Programs like Durango DEVO, Durango Area Youth Hockey Association, Four Corners Volleyball Club, and Durango Winter Sports Club, as well as Rec Leagues and school teams, create many ways to get involved. Even without joining a club or team, there are many trails to explore and other ways to enjoy the outdoor amenities individually or with family and friends.
Events
Durango and the greater Southwest Colorado area offer a lively year-round event calendar. While not all events may be kid-friendly, many are created with younger audience in mind. The Durango Public Library hosts many family-friendly events including art classes, storytime, chess club, game zones, and more throughout the year. Special holiday events such as Children’s Halloween, Singing with Santa, and the Polar Express help create magical holiday memories.
Camps & Programs
Our little corner of the state has a wide variety of youth organizations, after-school and summer programs, sleep away camps, and more fun and educational opportunities - perfect for keeping kids active, engaged, learning, and growing!
- 4H is a long-standing youth development program that celebrates western heritage through projects such as animal breeding and care, sewing, gardening, cooking, and more. Each year, these projects are showcased at the county fair along with a carnival, live music, and family entertainment.
- The Powerhouse is a science center and museum geared toward early learners with ever-changing, hands-on exhibits. Beyond their normal museum hours, which allow kids to freely roam and explore the interactive exhibits, they also offer organized programs such as science fairs, coding camps, LEGO league, and more.
- Colvig Silver Camps is just 10 miles northeast of Durango, towards Vallecito Reservoir. A multi-generational family-owned and operated establishment, they have both day and overnight camps for grades 2-11. The camp has a focus on outdoor exploration, arts and crafts, music, and other group oriented activities.
- Boys & Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters are both national organizations with Durango/La Plata County chapters that are locally focused. Boys & Girls Clubs provides after school and summer programs, while Big Brothers Big Sisters provides a more intimate one-on-one mentoring program, connecting kids (“Littles”) with an adult (“Bigs”).
