Durango, Colorado has a rich western history and cowboy culture is still a big part of our community today. The True Western Roundup provides weekly entertainment throughout the summer at the La Plata County Fairgrounds.
The History
Although True Western Roundup (TWR) only dates back to 2014, rodeos can be traced back to Mexican cowboys in the early 1800s. The infamous Professional Bull Riders (PBR) group was formed in 1992 bringing the rodeo scene into mainstream limelight. Al Harper is the founder of TWR; invested in preserving Durango’s western heritage, he is also known for his ownership of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The event is hosted at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, this rain or shine event highlights local and visiting talent!
Rodeo Events
The stands fill up as classic variety events are showcased at every rodeo. These include saddle bronc riding, ranch bronc riding, breakaway roping, mutton bustin’, steer riding, barrel racing, team roping, steer wrestling, and tie down. Of course bull riding is the highlight of the evening as cowboys hold on and try to ride for eight seconds!
Rodeo Royalty
Rodeo royalty is chosen to act as ambassadors and spokeswomen on behalf of TWR and rodeo culture. Offering professionalism, integrity, and leadership, they are a public figures at parades, events, performances, and more. Girls ranging from 8 - 18 years old are able to throw their name in the hat to be the Queen, Princess, Jr. Princess, and Sweetheart. They are chosen based on an application and written test, personal interview, writing and public speaking, and horsemanship and riding ability.
Tickets & Concessions
For the 2024 season, adult (18+) tickets are available online or at the gates for $20. Kids, seniors (65+), and military tickets are sold for $18. Little ones under 4 get in for free! This family friendly event offers concessions including burgers, tacos, chips, soda, and beer on site.
