The La Plata County Fairgrounds comprises many different facilities nestled between the Animas River and North Main Avenue in Durango, CO. The largest and one of the most used event spaces in the area, the La Plata County Fairgrounds is a staple that brings in thousands of locals and visitors every year.
The History & Facilities
These 32 acres in Durango’s North Main District became the La Plata County Fairgrounds dating back to the late 1800s. It once had a racetrack, 600 foot grandstand, football field, and more equestrian features. In 2000 it was redesigned and built as what we see today. On the 25+ developed acres, there is a 10,000 square foot exhibit hall; six additional breakout rooms; two commercial kitchens; two baseball fields; oversized picnic shelter; 33,000 square foot covered horse arena; and 1,600 seat rodeo arena with concessions, restrooms, announcer’s stand, and stock pens.
The Durango Recreation Center facilities are adjacent to the La Plata County Fairgrounds property. This adds a playground, additional fields, swimming pools, and gym to the amenities in this area.
Events
Throughout the year the different spaces are rented by many companies to host their meetings and events here. Popular public events include the La Plata County Fair, the True Western Roundup Rodeo, Snowdown’s Fashion Do’s & Don’ts, Craft Fairs, Home & Ranch Show, 4Corners Expo, and many more.
These facilities are a huge addition to the area for many reasons and host so many community events every year. The surrounding cities and towns also offer other fairgrounds arenas and events spaces including the Montezuma Country Fairgrounds in Cortez, CO which hosts Montezuma 4H events, Four States Ag Expo, car races, rodeos, and much more keeping the western lifestyle alive.
