The Animas River is a main focal point of Durango as it winds its way through town. There are many ways to enjoy this natural resource, from fishing and swimming to walking along the river trail and boating. Rafting is one of the best ways to experience the Animas, as you can gather your group in a boat or two and ride the rapids!
Boating on the Animas River
The Animas River begins in the high mountains just north of Silverton, CO and is primarily fed by winter snowmelt, peaking during the spring runoff. The water typically reaches its highest flow in May and June offering the biggest rapids. In July and August, the water level is generally still high enough to enjoy while paired with warmer weather and milder rapids.
