Summer in Southwest Colorado is a perfect combination of hot days and cool nights. The range of activities makes the Durango area unlike any other. From hiking and biking to camping and river rafting, there is something for everyone.
Arriving:
-Fly into Durango La Plata County Airport (DRO) with seasonal direct flights available from Houston, TX! Views of the La Plata Mountains will greet you and local driving services like Buck Horn Limousine, Durango Cab, or Animas Transportation. Renting a car from the airport or another local company will give you the ultimate freedom to explore the area.
-Check-in at one of Durango’s boutique hotels like the LeLand House and Adventure Inn.
-Put on some sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses and take a stroll along the Animas River Trail to see the Animas River run through town and make your way to Historic Downtown for dinner at a local restaurant like Fired Up Pizzeria, Derailed Pour House, or Carver’s Brewing Co.
-Head back to the room to unpack, relax, and rest up for all the fun weekend’s activities!
First Day:
-Head north on Highway 550 to Purgatory Resort to bike on their downhill course or enjoy the alpine slide and mountain coaster.
-Continue north and drive on the infamous, winding Million Dollar Highway to Silverton, CO. Pit stops along the way like Coalbank Pass and Molas Pass offer breathtaking views and you can find lakes, waterfalls, and trails all along the way.
-Walk down Silverton’s Main Street with shops, cafes, and restaurants. Take in the old-western, small town scenery!
Second Day:
-Have a relaxing morning with brunch at Rupert’s, Durango Diner, or Oscar’s Cafe.
-Explore one of the many easily accessible, in-town trails with great views of the city such as Smelter Mountain, Animas City Mountain, or the Rim Trail.
-Cool down at Lake Nighthorse with a GoFish Durango fishing trip or playing on the Wibit. A raft trip down the Animas River will also be refreshing and Mild to Wild, Mountain Waters Rafting, or Southwest Raft & Jeep will provide all the gear and knowledge you’ll need for a safe & fun experience.
-Have one more night out in Durango before getting a good night's rest to fly out tomorrow.
