Fall Cleaning

Fall Cleaning

Getting ready for winter is just as important as spring cleaning after the snow melts. This includes general cleaning checklist items as well as preparing your home for winter.

Fall Cleaning Checklist

From little daily tasks to deep cleaning chores, here’s a room by room checklist for fall.

Kitchen:

  • Clear and wipe down countertops
  • Scrub the sink, oven, refrigerator, and microwave
  • Sweep and mop
  • Sort through refrigerator, freezer, and pantry for expired food
  • Wipe baseboards
  • Clear out unused items like cooking utensils, appliances, dishware and glassware, and wipe inside of cabinets

Bathrooms:

  • Clear and clean countertops
  • Wipe down the sink, shower walls, and bathtub. Snake drains if needed
  • Wipe down mirrors and walls where condensations may have created drip marks
  • Clean the toilet
  • Wash towels and bathmats
  • Declutter cabinets and reorganize products
  • Wipe baseboards

Living Room:

  • Pick up items and organize, find storage for things that are not often used
  • Spot clean spills and stains on upholstery and carpet/rugs
  • Clean TV screens and sanitize remotes
  • Wash throw pillows and blankets
  • Dust fans, lights, window sills, and anywhere else that’s needed
  • Sweep fireplace and get the chimney flue inspected
  • Wipe baseboards

Bedrooms:

  • Wash sheets and bedding
  • Tidy the room and closet, get rid of unused items and clothes/shoes you no longer wear
  • Dust all surfaces
  • Clean carpets/rugs
  • Wipe baseboards

For all rooms, consider hiring a professional cleaning service for items like deep cleaning carpets or windows.

Outside

Preparing the exterior of your home is important for winter, especially in Colorado where we can get heavy snowfall. Storing patio furniture, raking leaves, cleaning out gutters, and trimming trees and bushes will set you up for success in the spring. You’ll also want to drain hoses and faucets, change your furnace filter, remove debris from exhaust ducts, and have your roof inspected. Whether yourself or by hiring a professional, you’ll want to ensure that these items are taken care of to help protect your home from winter’s chill.

City of Durango Fall Cleanup

This is a service the City of Durango’s Street Division manages and is paid for by residents through their City of Durango utility bills. Fall Cleanup is specifically for tree branches and leaf bags and boxes. Spring Cleanup is the springtime counterpart that runs on a similar basis but allows much more to be picked up including furniture, scrap metal, lumber, yard waste, and more. Both offer a great opportunity to freshen up your property, prepare for heavy snow loads, and fire mitigate. Refer to the neighborhood schedule on the City of Durango’s website here.
