Fall - Seasonal Activities in Durango, CO

Fall - Seasonal Activities in Durango, CO

Fall is a magical season in Southwest Colorado. As the weather cools and the leaves turn an array of brilliant colors, Durango offers many fun activities to make the autumn months even more special.

Visit a Pumpkin Patch

A pumpkin patch is the epitome of fall vibes, with flannel attire, apple cider in hand, and golden sunsets. Luckily, Durango’s climate allows local farmers to grow beautiful pumpkins and host visitors who want to pick their own.

Jack-a-lope Acres

Just southwest of Ignacio, Jack-a-lope Acres is a family-run working farm that opens its doors to the public in the fall for lots of fun. From the pumpkin patch and corn maze to hayrides and pumpkin slides, there’s something for everyone. Special events include sunset tours, dog days, live music, and more.

Falfa Pumpkin Patch

A small, family-friendly pumpkin patch, Falfa Pumpkin Patch is the quintessential place to spend an autumn day. Just a short 9-mile drive from downtown Durango, you can find and cut your pumpkin straight off the vine. This small farm offers big fun with play areas, barrel train rides, photo shoots, and three special Spooky Nights with hot chocolate and a movie.

Enjoy the Fall Colors

Cooler temperatures and shorter days halt deciduous trees’ chlorophyll production, allowing the orange and yellow hues to shine through. Throughout the area, the mountains light up in brilliant shades, creating a breathtaking autumn canvas.

Leaf Peeping

A day trip around Southwest Colorado is the best way to see a variety of vistas and the amazing landscape of Southwest Colorado. The loop is a very popular drive, taking you around Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, Dolores, and Mancos, which include many different mountain ranges and elevations. Don’t be surprised to see others also out and about doing the same thing! There are many sources for tracking the color changes which is important as it can change daily and annually. However, peak color typically occurs around the first week of October.

Hiking and biking during the fall are ideal with cooler weather and gorgeous trails. Winding through the forest filled with golden aspens makes for a fun adventure. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad also offers a “Fall Photographers Special” which is a specially curated experience for professionals to capture “the shot” of the iconic locomotive and the surrounding landscapes.

Celebrate with Others

Pumpkin carving, trick-or-treating, and soup exchanges are some of the highlights in October. Durango and the surrounding areas host many events to truly embrace the autumn season. Apple picking, Harvest Festivals, a Fall Photography conference, and more are just some of the community events to join in on.
