Located at the heart of Southwest Colorado, Durango offers a wide variety of daily amenities for its community, including shopping, transportation, and events, as well as medical facilities. With multiple options to choose from depending on the type of care needed and location, Durango is well-equipped to meet a range of medical needs.
CommonSpirit Mercy Hospital
Previously known as Mercy Regional Medical Center, CommonSpirit Mercy Hospital is the leading healthcare provider for Southwest Colorado.
Mercy Regional Medical Center History
Durango’s first hospital, originally known as Mercy Hospital of the San Juans, was founded in 1882 by the Sisters of Mercy. There were six beds along the Animas River, where the Durango Public Library now resides. In 2006, after multiple additions, remodels, and expansions, Mercy Medical Center outgrew its original site and relocated to a brand new, state-of-the-art, 212,000 square-foot facility in Grandview (10 minutes east of downtown Durango). At the time, this area was nearly undeveloped aside from the new Mercy Hospital; since then, the Three Springs neighborhood has grown into a bustling community with additional medical practices, businesses, restaurants, and real estate.
Now operating as CommonSpirit Mercy Hospital, Durango’s primary hospital has 82 beds, the latest medical technologies, an ambulatory surgical center, and additional on-site amenities, including a healing garden, labyrinth, chapel, nutritious cafeteria, and a TLC program. It is a not-for-profit, full-service, acute-care hospital designated as a Level III trauma center and specializing in orthopedic and spine surgery, cardiology, emergency, and trauma care, cancer care, and more serving the greater Four Corners area.
Animas Surgical Hospital
Founded in 2004, Animas Surgical Hospital (ASH) is owned and operated by local physicians and aims to provide innovative and exceptional healthcare. Located in the Rivergate complex along the Animas River, just minutes south of downtown Durango, ASH offers diagnostic imaging, emergency services, internal medicine, occupational medicine, surgical services, and more. It has four offices throughout the city for various specialties, including urgent care. The Rivergate area is also home to other medical practitioners, local businesses, and residences.
In addition to these hospitals and urgent care facilities, you can find many holistic practitioners, private practices, and specialists such as vision, dental, and oncology. As Durango locals, we are grateful for the wide range of health care services available.
