Parks and Recreation

While Durango provides outdoor recreation opportunities in the San Juans, the City of Durango also offers many activities with organized sport teams, a gym and fitness center, and other indoor and outdoor recreational options.

Durango Parks & Rec consists of Chapman Hill, Durango Gymnastics, Lake Nighthorse, and the Rec Center. The City of Durango also owns and operates over 3,000 acres of open space with 100 miles of trails to enjoy. Through these different avenues, there are lessons, teams, and open gym times for many different sports.

Chapman Hill turns from ice skating rink and ski hill in the winter to a rollerblading rink and BMX trail in the summertime. Home to ski and hockey teams, roller derby, open skate, and more, the facilities are also available to rent for private parties. Similarly, the Durango Gymnastics center hosts organized teams as well as birthday parties. Lake Nighthorse offers 1,500 acres of Animas River water to enjoy just 5 minutes away from downtown. With docks, a boat launch, beach, and Wibit aqua park there are many ways to enjoy this reservoir.

The Rec Center is a full recreational facility including pools, hot tub, water slide, outdoor splash pad, locker rooms, climbing wall, gym equipment, indoor track, gym courts, racquetball courts, game area, meeting rooms, an outdoor amphitheater, and playground. The vast array of options allows for everyone to participate individually or join in on programs like swim class lessons, pickleball, or a sports team with age groups from 3 months to senior citizen.

No matter your idea of exercise and fun, Durango has many different types of activities and facilities in Durango. Please let us know if you have any questions about Parks & Rec or other local programs.
