Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply want a change of scenery, below are some of our favorite weekend escapes within a four-hour drive from Durango, CO.

 

Pagosa Springs, CO

Just a little over an hour east on Highway 160, you’ll reach Pagosa Springs, Colorado, best known for its natural geothermal hot springs. The Springs Resort sits along the banks of the San Juan River for a relaxing soak with beautiful views. Just a block away is the charming downtown area with shops and restaurants. Other nearby attractions include the Rocky Mountain Wildlife Park, Wolf Creek Ski Area, and Chimney Rock National Monument. 

 

Grand Junction, CO

Home to Colorado National Monument, Grand Junction is surrounded by amazing natural wonders. With the Colorado River and Gunnison River intersecting here, city amenities contrast well with natural beauty and outdoor adventure. Palisade, CO is also located in the Grand Valley and known for its peach orchards (Palisade Peaches) and wine vineyards, and is perfect for a scenic bike ride. Following Highway 550 north from Durango, you’ll get to Grand Junction in just under four hours.

Moab, UT

About three hours northwest, Moab, Utah is the gateway to both Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. The beautiful rock formations, natural arches, and vast canyons create an amazing playground for rock crawling, hiking, and biking. The Colorado River flows near town and adds opportunities for rafting, paddleboard, and kayaking. Skydiving and bungee jumping are two high-adrenaline activities also available. The town has a lot of local restaurants and shops and can be enjoyed year-round due to its warmer climate. 

 

Silverton, CO; Ouray, CO; Ridgeway, CO; Telluride, CO; Mancos, CO - The Loop

For a classic Colorado road trip, The Loop is a must. This scenic drive can be done in a long day - about five hours of drive time - or extended into a weekend adventure, with plenty of options for staying overnight including riverside cabins, luxury hotels, and off-grid campsites. Passing through the six mountain towns below, you can drive clockwise or counterclockwise, and with the ever changing scenery, no trip is ever the same! 

 

  • Silverton is ideal for backcountry exploration and has a quaint Main Street for morning coffee or dinner out.

  • Ouray is known for its hot springs, Box Canyon Falls, Via Fertta, and Ouray Ice Park. 

  • Ridgway is a quaint stop with local restaurants, cafes, and annual events like skijoring. 

  • Telluride offers everything from a picturesque Main Street to miles of hiking trails and Telluride Ski Resort. MountainFilm Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Telluride Film Festival, and Telluride Blues & Brews Festival draw visitors from all around the world. 

  • Dolores has the Dolores River running parallel to town with amenities including McPhee Reservoir, Boggy Draw Trails, and the annual Dolores River Festival.

  • Mancos is known as the Gateway to Mesa Verde National Park, and blends history, modern art galleries, local restaurants, and its own annual festivities.

Albuquerque, NM

Albuquerque, New Mexico earns a spot on this list and provides a great destination for a change of scenery and culture. Along the original Route 66, and about three hours away from Durango, you’ll find vibrant architecture, authentic New Mexico cuisine (don’t miss the green and red chile!), as well as live music and theatre venues. The Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway, Annual International Balloon Fiesta, and cultural heritage found in Old Town and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center tell the story of the rich Native American and Spanish history. Continue northeast to visit Santa Fe, NM - the state capital - known for its unique blend of history and creativity, with Pueblo-style architecture and art-centric community.
