Durango is nestled in the southwest corner of Colorado and the Rocky Mountains and is known for its stunning scenery and vibrant outdoor lifestyle. Whether you're looking for a drive to a spectacular lookout point or are up for a hike to take in the views, here are a few of our favorite scenic viewpoints in and around Durango.
The Rim
One of our top picks is this rim view from the west-facing rim of the Fort Lewis College Mesa. Accessible by both trail (ABC Trail, Horse Gulch Trail System, and more) and road (College Avenue and 8th Street), everyone can enjoy the expansive views. There are parking pullouts and short trails to find a private viewpoint. Lion’s Den is a popular spot and offers a covered gazebo. The views of Hogsback, Perins Peak, and the La Plata Mountains behind the City of Durango are accompanied by a glimpse of the Animas Valley. On a clear day, you can see the mountain peaks to the north.
Animas Mountain & Smelter Mountain
These in-town hikes are both fantastic options for panoramic views of Durango and its surrounding landscapes.

Animas Mountain is located on the north side of town. The trail offers stunning views looking south over Durango, and the summit provides a breathtaking perspective of the Animas Valley to the north.

Smelter Mountain is located on the south side of town and showcases views to the north, overlooking Durango and the Animas River.
Castle Rock
For those seeking a moderate challenge, summiting Castle Rock via Elbert Creek Trail is well worth the 5-mile in and out hike. Starting in a grove of aspen trees, you’ll gain elevation, pass an old cabin, and reach the exposed cliffs facing east that offer a huge 180 degree view of the Needles, Electra Lake, and much more. The trailhead is located about three miles south of Purgatory Ski Resort.
Engineer Mountain
One of the most iconic peaks in the Durango area, Engineer Mountain delivers unmatched panoramic views from the summit. While the hike is less than five miles, the steep elevation gain and loose shale at the top make this a high difficulty, high reward hike or bike.
Other Scenic Viewpoints in Southwest Colorado
If you fly into Durango - La Plata County Airport (DRO), you’ll immediately be greeted with stunning mountain views. Specialty helicopter tours and hot air balloon events can offer a once-in-a-lifetime, different point of view.
Mesa Verde National Park, located between Mancos and Cortez, provides unique scenery of the ancient cliff dwellings built hundreds of years ago. After visiting the National Park, you can continue along “The Loop”, taking you over mountain passes and through many Southwest Colorado towns all featuring fantastic vistas.
