After experiencing a stunning Southwest Colorado sunset, the fun in Durango doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. From local restaurants and bars to immersing yourself in nature’s dark skies, there’s plenty to do after dark.
Downtown Nightlife
Although Durango isn’t known for its nightlife, there are some fun establishments downtown for a quick nightcap or an evening out on the town. Try out one of Durango’s many breweries like Steamworks, SKA, or Carvers Brewing Company for a microbrew paired with a delicious meal. The Office Spiritorium in the Strater Hotel and The Bookcase and Barber, a cozy speakeasy, are two upscale options for a more mellow atmosphere. If you are looking for a more lively bar scene with pool tables, venture to The Garage, Orio’s Roadhouse, or El Rancho. The Wildhorse Saloon is a western dance hall open Thursday - Saturday for line dancing, swing dancing, and occasionally live music.
Stargazing
Located in the southwestern corner of the Rocky Mountains, our incredible nocturnal wildlife emerges with the stars. Because Durango’s light pollution is much lower than that of larger cities, you can typically see thousands of stars from anywhere in the area, as long as there’s no cloud coverage. Camping, whether in a tent or RV, is one of the most popular summer activities, creating the perfect stargazing atmosphere complete with a campfire and s’mores.
Mesa Verde National Park is an International Dark Sky Park, which means the artificial light is at a minimum, making the night sky even more vibrant. Chimney Rock, a National Monument near Pagosa Springs just 47 miles east of Durango, offers special programs including full moon, night sky, solstice and equinox viewings, and more throughout the year. This provides an opportunity to view the many changes in the sky from an archaeological site and learn about its history.
Hot Springs
The Durango Hot Springs are open until 10pm daily for a relaxing nighttime soak. Onsite amenities include food trucks and a bar, as well as spa services and a live music schedule that will make your evening extra special. Similarly, the Pagosa Hot Springs is open until 10pm for day guests, and 24-hour access for hotel guests.
Annual Events
Throughout the year, Durango and our local businesses host hundreds of events. Live music, non-profit benefits, and happy hours are among the most recurring, with many annual favorites as well. The Snowdown Light Parade is a special event at dusk, Downtown and Animas Valley Balloon Glows let hot air balloons shine, and of course Fourth of July fireworks light up the sky every year. Noel Night, Bar D Chuckwagon Supper, and the True Western Roundup all happen under a dark sky as well.
